Lehigh Valley GIS Aerial Control

Lehigh and Northampton Counties, PA

Client: BAE Systems - ADR
Owner: Lehigh Valley Planning Commission

Barry Isett & Associates, Inc. (BIA) was part of the Lehigh Valley aerial mapping development team from its inception, working in close affiliation with BAE Systems-ADR. In the Spring of 2000, BIA survey crews set over 60 control points throughout a 729-square mile area in Lehigh and Northampton Counties. BIA used GPS technology to determine the precise latitude, longitude, and elevation for each control point. These points were later used during the processing of the digital orthophotography, serving as a QA/QC check and ensuring a high degree of accuracy for the overall base map. The Lehigh Valley Planning Commission used the digital orthophotos to update and create new data layers for their Geographic Information System (GIS). Contour information was produced and vector overlays were compiled for various feature classes. All of the orthophoto digital files are in ARC/INFO and ArcView compatible format. The Counties and the Planning Commission made the first release of GIS data available to municipalities in August 2001.
