Harriton High School, a candidate for LEED silver certification, welcomed students in spring 2010, culminating six years of planning and construction.  Barry Isett & Associates provided civil engineering and environmental services to KCBA Architects.  As the 50+ acre campus already housed the existing school and associated parking and athletic facilities, a major project challenge was to design the new 328,000-square-foot-building on the tight site and to phase construction so that education and sports activities could continue seamlessly.  To facilitate the process, the existing stadium was totally rebuilt and the stadium’s field was converted from grass to artificial turf to provide a more consistent and drainable playing surface capable of supporting heavier use.  Another playfield was temporarily converted to parking with porous asphalt paving for enhanced stormwater management.  The project features several innovative stormwater management strategies including bio-infiltration swales in the parking lot to collect and treat rainwater for recharge into the ground and an underground storage tank which takes water from the roof and recycles it in the building as gray water to flush toilets.  The original school building was demolished after the new one was completed and occupied providing tennis courts, a lacrosse field, and parking in its place.
