The expansion of the Scandlon Gymnasium athletic facilities was a top priority for Kings College, located in downtown Wilkes-Barre, PA. The two-story addition was constructed on a compact urban site in the downtown. Barry Isett and Associates was the structural engineer in the design of 41,000 SF of new multi-purpose recreation and education space which features a 20,000 SF gymnasium on the building’s upper level. Program spaces, including athletics, student recreation, and health sciences, were creatively stacked and advantageously zoned to utilize the site’s natural topography.
Designed by Spillman Farmer Architects, Bethlehem, PA, the 10.5-million-dollar Scandlon Health and Wellness Center received the 2013 Award of Excellence from the AIA Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter.
