Candace Hickey, PE, joined Barry Isett & Associates, Inc. in 2017 to expand the company’s scope of services to provide in-house geotechnical engineering. She conducts investigations of subsurface conditions of sites proposed for development to determine their suitability for the intended structure. In addition to evaluating karst topography, geologic faults, thick organic/fill layers, glacial deposits, thick surficial alluvial deposits, buried streams and compressible clay, she considers potential environmental hazards such as earthquakes, landslides, sinkholes, soil liquefaction, debris flows and rockfalls. Based upon her findings, she makes recommendations for site stabilization and foundation options for each project.
Over a career that spans two decades, she has gained significant experience with scour analyses, preliminary abutment stability analyses, pavement section design, global stability analysis of mechanically stabilized earth walls, slope stability analyses, tunnel parameters, lateral earth pressures and IBC seismic analysis. Ms. Hickey has provided recommendations for shallow, mat, intermediate and deep foundations as well as soil and rock anchors. Her experience includes infiltration testing and limiting zone determination. She has made recommendations and provided supervision in remediation of soil including removal/replacement, moisture conditioning, soil amendments and geotextile placement. She is also familiar with the limitations and corrections of a nuclear density gage.
