ArtsQuest Creative Factory Powered by PPL
Project Information
The ArtsQuest Creative Factory redefines how a community creates, learns, and connects.
Barry Isett & Associates (Isett) is providing Structural Engineering and Construction Quality Assurance services for the ArtsQuest Creative Factory, an approximately 80,000-square-foot, five-story visual and performing arts facility located in Bethlehem’s Southside Arts District.
Developed in collaboration with MKSD Architects and built by Boyle Construction, the project replaces the former Banana Factory with a purpose-built facility designed to expand access to arts education, studio space, galleries, and performance venues.
The design reflects both continuity and reinvention. Elements of the original Banana Factory were incorporated into the new structure, with portions of the demolition material reused within the building foundation, reinforcing a connection to the site’s history while supporting a modern, durable facility.
The building includes a diverse mix of specialized spaces such a recording studio, media lab, maker space, and dedicated studios for ceramics, glassmaking, mosaics, and digital arts. In total, the facility will feature 36 artist studios distributed across three floors, supported by shared gathering spaces, event areas, and public galleries that foster collaboration and community engagement.
Designed with accessibility and community impact in mind, the Creative Factory introduces a subsidized studio model, offering artists space at approximately half of typical market rates. A competitive application process ensures a curated and active creative community, while expanded programming is expected to significantly increase annual student participation from roughly 5,000 to 10,000 visitors.
The facility builds on the success of popular existing programs, including glassmaking and ceramics, while expanding into new digital and interdisciplinary learning environments. Public-facing spaces and flexible programming areas are designed to enhance visitor experience and strengthen ArtsQuest’s role as a regional cultural anchor.
From a structural and construction perspective, the project demonstrates strong execution, being delivered on time and under budget. A standout feature includes the BSI Corporate Benefits Deck, which provides elevated, unobstructed views of both North and South Bethlehem, reinforcing the building’s connection to the surrounding community and industrial heritage.
Overall, the Creative Factory represents a transformative investment in arts, education, and community development, positioning ArtsQuest to expand its impact across the Lehigh Valley while creating a vibrant, inclusive destination for artists and visitors alike. The ArtsQuest Creative Factory Powered by PPL will have a soft opening in November, with the grand opening set for January 19, 2027.
Isett was also the structural engineer for the ArtsQuest Center at SteelStacks and is on the project team for the Turn & Grind Shop transformation project.
