Isett’s Team and Ownership values shine through Isett’s Structural Engineering Operations Manager Ben Segal. Ben has been a great collaborator between the Structural and MEP teams. He proactively identifies potential conflicts and items that need coordination and is responsive when assisting with resolutions. This collaborative problem solving gives both sides of the design team better insight into how to improve project coordination going forward. In his role, Ben has a wide variety of responsibilities. He feels lucky to be involved throughout the entire span of a project—from issuing proposals, to completing or supervising structural analysis and design work, to preparing the structural deliverables (drawings, specifications, letters, etc.), all the way through the construction phase consisting of reviewing shop drawings, answering contractors’ requests for information, and providing guidance to resolve unforeseen conditions. Part of the job involves close coordination with external clients (architects, owners, construction managers, general contractors) and other departments within Isett (MEP, Civil, Geotechnical, CMT). Ben also serves as an invoice manager and supervises the Structural team in the Capital Region office. As a team manager, it has been rewarding to see the growth and development of the associates under his supervision. Ben has also enjoyed working on complex projects that require him to continue learning and growing as an engineer and as a collaborator on project teams. Some current projects for Ben include new construction of the 130,000-SF, two-story York Suburban Intermediate School; new construction of the Pennsylvania State Police Academy, which involves completing various structural delegated design components, such as reinforced masonry wall design and various foundations for mechanical and electrical equipment as well as for sign structures; and a 10,000-SF interior renovation and 1,800-SF building addition and new entrance canopy for Wellspan Health Waynesboro Hospital Emergency Department. The main goal of the project is to separate the public entrance from the ambulance/EMT entry. Congratulations to Ben on being named September’s Values in Action Winner!
